Pre-Parenting Counselling

Pre-parenting therapy in London and online supports couples who are preparing to become parents and want to think carefully about how having a child may change their relationship, family life and individual roles. You may be expecting your first baby, considering whether you’re ready to become parents, or simply wanting to strengthen your relationship before taking this next step together.

Becoming a parent can be an exciting and meaningful transition, but it can also bring uncertainty, pressure and changes that are difficult to anticipate. You might have different expectations about parenting, worries about how you’ll divide responsibilities, or concerns about how becoming parents could affect your relationship. You may also be carrying hopes, fears or experiences from your own childhood that you want to understand before starting a family.

In pre-parenting counselling, you have a structured space to talk openly about the transition to parenthood and the changes it may bring. You can explore your expectations, identify potential areas of disagreement, and develop a clearer understanding of how you want to work together as parents. The aim is not to create a perfect plan for parenthood, but to help you feel more prepared, connected and able to navigate the changes together.

Pre-parenting counselling can also be helpful if you’re already expecting a baby. Pregnancy can bring new emotions and conversations about identity, responsibilities, finances, work, family boundaries, intimacy and the kind of parents you want to be. Counselling can give you space to have some of these conversations before the demands of caring for a baby take over.

What are the challenges of preparing for parenthood?

You might have one particular concern you’d like to explore, or several conversations that you’ve been finding difficult to have together. Some common issues couples bring to pre-parenting counselling include:

  • We’re thinking about having children, but we’re not sure if we’re ready

  • We disagree about when or whether to become parents

  • We’re worried that having a baby will change our relationship

  • We have very different ideas about what parenting should look like

  • We’re already arguing about how we’ll divide childcare and household responsibilities

  • I’m worried that I’ll end up doing most of the parenting or mental load

  • We have different expectations about work, finances or parental leave

  • We disagree about boundaries with grandparents and other family members

  • I’m anxious about becoming a parent because of my own childhood experiences

  • We’re worried about how becoming parents might affect our sex life and intimacy

  • We struggle to talk about difficult subjects without arguing

  • One of us feels more ready for parenthood than the other

  • We want to feel more secure in our relationship before starting a family

  • We’re expecting a baby and want to prepare for the changes ahead
